Dock and Slip Sign Count Planner

This planner multiplies the number of slips by the signs each slip needs, then adds boat nameplates, direction signs and any spares you choose. Marinas use it to turn a dock plan into a sign count. Harbor Plaque Co also needs your notes on mounting, exposure and upkeep, because a count says nothing about which material suits each spot.

Build your plan

Record mounting surfaces, water exposure and maintenance methods for material review. Inventory counts do not establish marine suitability.

The decision behind a marina slip-sign order

The berth reference stays with the slip while the vessel name may change. Keep those schedules separate. Describe water exposure, mounting surface and maintenance methods when requesting a material recommendation, and distinguish small close-range slip plates from larger directional signs.

Keep with your brief: Slip sequence, vessel wording where applicable, mounting and exposure.

Count berth identifiers and directions

Thirty-six slips each need one identifier. Six wayfinding signs and two spare slip plates are additional pieces.

Understand what the result means

(Slips × physical signs per slip) + vessel and direction signs + spares

The result is 44 pieces, which still need a sign-by-sign content schedule. Keep the berth identifier stable when a vessel changes. If the same number appears at several mounting points, preserve those positions in the installation list so the delivered batch can be checked without guessing.

How would a marina count signs for thirty-six slips?

Willow Harbor is replacing signs on East Dock and West Dock, which have thirty-six slips between them. Each slip gets one Dock & Slip Number Sign. The dockmaster also needs six direction signs at the gangway and the dock junctions. She enters thirty-six slips, one sign per slip, six direction signs and two spare slip plates for future renumbering. The total is forty-four. She records which signs face the walkway and which face boats coming in, notes the splash at the outer slips and sends it all to Harbor Plaque Co.

Check these details before using the result

Counting slip signs from one side only
A slip may need a number read from the walkway and from the water. Note where two faces are needed before you total.
Mixing boat names with slip numbers
Boat nameplates change with tenants. Count them on their own line so slip signs stay permanent.
No notes on exposure
Write down spray, sun and cleaning for each dock. The count does not cover materials, and the quote needs those notes.

Questions about this planner

What are spare slip plates for?

A spare is usually a blank or extra plate for a slip that is added, split or damaged later. Enter only the number you can name a use for. The planner adds no buffer on its own.

Does the planner tell us which signs suit an exposed dock?

No. It counts pieces only. Material choice depends on the mounting surface, the water and sun at that spot and how it is cleaned. Send those notes with your count, and the quote will propose a material for review.

All buying guides
Berth numbers versus vessel nameplates

Give the berth a stable location identity and the vessel its approved personal name, then decide which physical pieces should change when occupancy changes.

Boat name plaque layout and lettering guide

A maker-side layout guide with character counts and letter-height planning, plus a plain summary of the federal name and hailing port marking rules for documented vessels cited to 46 CFR Part 67, stating clearly that a Harbor Plaque Co decorative plaque is not a substitute for required markings.

Counting double-sided marina direction signs

Count complete two-sided direction-sign assemblies for the order, then maintain a separate face schedule for wording and orientation approval.

Coordinate marina signs and vessel nameplates for delivery

Keep fixed berth identity separate from boat names and temporary marina information. Approve the location, reading direction and mounting for each sign, then group the order by dock or vessel. Recognition awards and commemorative pieces need their own presentation schedule.
